About Our Programming
Dance Metro DC’s programming is a direct reflection of our members’ needs. Over the years our programming and offerings have shifted and changed with our community. While DMDC’s programming may continue to grow to serve our members, we will always remain committed to the three primary needs among the regional dance community:
Community Cohesion among a diverse spectrum of dance makers and creative participants.
Cultural Visibility including audience development and identifying community impact.
Economic Stability for individuals and organizations in dance.
Community Cohesion Programming
Membership – A benefits program that provides special discounts on organizational and partner services and offers access to unique opportunities for dance professionals throughout the metropolitan area.
Community Convenings – Community-driven initiatives bring participants together through convenings aimed at cultivating partnerships and building social capital.
Online Dance Resource Directory – An online listing of over 300 active dance artists, companies, studios, venues and other partner resources throughout the region and beyond.
Online Dance Events Calendars – Performances, master classes and workshops, auditions, special events, ongoing classes and job opportunities are submitted by partners and hosted on Dance Metro DC’s website.
Cultural Visibility Programming
Presentation Opportunities – Performance in Progress is a program dedicated to the development of works-in-progress and facilitated feedback. This platform allows for artists at all stages of development to share their work in mini sessions and are later presented at the Atlas Performing Arts Center.
Dance Journalism Project – Dance Metro DC’s Dance Journalism Project is a professional development program for dance writers in the DC metropolitan area. Participating writers will work in a cohort environment through a series of professional development sessions aimed at building critique skills focused on writing reviews for dance performances. This project furthers the historical preservation of dance documentation in the DC area.
Anti-Oppression Programming – Through a combination of contracting with outside organizers, and the development of a local cohort of trainers, Dance Metro DC has committed to working towards the elimination of oppression (racism, sexism and misogyny, ableism, ageism, etc.) throughout the regional dance community.
Advocacy – Dance Metro DC fulfills a key role as an advocate for the regional dance community and its participants.
Promotional Emails - Dedicated emails highlighting our member events and special opportunities to give you exposure to approximately 2,000 active regional email subscribers.
Economic Stability Programming
Rehearsal Space Subsidies – This grant program provides both a monetary award for rehearsal space costs and discounted rehearsal space provided through DMDC Institutional Members.
Professional Development – Throughout this training series we engage multiple partners and various approaches to enhancing core competencies for dance professionals. Series topics include trainings for dance educators, dance journalists, financial management, property ownership, and other topics identified by a needs assessment of our membership.
