The Dance Metro DC Leadership Development Series kicks off with two back-to-back sessions with performing arts and nonprofit strategy expert Ed Spitzberg of Spitzberg Advisors, May 20th. Ed is a nonprofit executive and fundraiser with over 15 years’ experience. Ed has been Executive Director of nonprofit organizations including the multidisciplinary afterschool arts program Sitar Arts Center, and a development executive for Arena Stage and Afterschool Alliance. As a performing artist, Ed has produced and performed in sold-out productions, including the winner of the 2015 “Best Overall Show” in the 2015 Capital Fringe Festival. Ed has an MBA in Entertainment Management and Marketing from the Anderson School at UCLA and a BA in Ethics, Politics and Economics from Yale University. read more here

First, in the Anatomy of a Non-Profit, Ed will discuss the business structure and unique quirks of the 501c3 structure. This practical session is geared for emerging dance leaders who are thinking of starting a non-profit, are working at one, or just want to know more about the most common organizational structure in our field.

Next, Ed will dive into his specialty, Strategic Planning for Dance Projects and Organizations. This hands on session will cover creating strategic plans that are: 1) Useful, as in, don’t just write and stick in a drawer but use to grow your work; 2) Understandable to artists, stakeholders, and communities; and 3) A creative experience to write, rather than a chore. This session will cover budgeting, visioning, and project design.
Open to anyone who attended Anatomy of a Non-Profit AND dance artists, educators, and administrators, who make decisions at an arts organization or project–big or small.
