West African Dance @ Local Motion Project
January 25, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
One event on January 25, 2020 at 6:30 pm
This class will focus on the authentic dance and drumming styles of select West African cultural groups. Classes are taught by KanKouran West African Dance Company Artistic Director, Assane Konte. The first 30 minutes of class consists of a warm-up, followed by a 30-minute breakdown of the steps for the dance being taught, and the last 30 minutes involve the execution of the steps across the floor accompanied by live drumming.
Women usually wear some type of tank top or t-shirt, athletic shorts or tights and a lappa, which is a traditional African wrap skirt. Due to the modest nature, and religious connotations of most of the dances being taught, the lappa is worn out of self, and cultural, respect. Men usually wear any type of athletic wear that is conducive to low to high impact movements
KanKouran West African Dance Company was founded for the purpose of contributing to the extension of the arts by introducing the essence of traditional African dancing and drumming to audiences; enriching American cultural heritage through the integration of authentic West African performing arts, and promoting intercultural understanding through education and the performing arts.
