Making Moves: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Action

February 29 @ 2:00 pm - 9:00 pm

This workshop is a needed professional development event for all dance educators. Participants will explore diversity, equity, and inclusion on the physical level, in the body, through movement studies and activities.

Through this workshop designed for studio dance teachers, Dr. Nya McCarthy-Brown shares teaching tools that can be used in your classroom immediately. Participants will be given resources and language around: relating to, teaching, and even excluding diverse dance forms. Utilizing a critical lens, dance educators will also develop a heightened awareness of Whiteness in dance education.

In addition, we will dance and enjoy moving, learning, and growing in community.

Dr. Nyama McCarthy-Brown is an Assistant Professor of Dance Pedagogy and Community Engagement, at The Ohio State University. Nyama has been an active performer, choreographer, and educator for over fifteen years. She is also an established scholar, with articles in numerous academic publications including Journal of Dance Education, Arts Education Policy Review, and The Journal of African American Studies; and chapters in Dance: Current Selected Research (2018), and The Arts as White Property: An Introduction to Race, Racism, and Arts in Education. In 2017, her book, Dance Pedagogy for a Diverse World: Culturally Relevant Teaching in Research, Theory, and Practice was released. Currently, she is developing an evolving duet about parenting a young black, male, child, that was performed in Brooklyn, New York, and San Francisco, California, in 2019. Nyama teaches dance education and contemporary dance with Africanist underpinnings grounded in community and celebration of all movers.
