DanceFest 2020 – Workshop

The Virginia Dance Coalition (VADC) announces the Sixth Annual DanceFest 2020 (DF2020), a two-day celebration of dance.
DF2020 kicks off with a Gala Performance of member companies on Friday, January 24 at the George Mason University (GMU) Harris Theatre, and continues on Sunday, February 2 with an all-day workshop of master classes and a Festival performance.
The DanceFest Workshop is held on Sunday, February 2, 2020 at the GMU DeLaski Performing Arts Building, with Master Classes and Seminars beginning at 9:30 am and running through 6:00 pm, culminating in a Festival Performance of emerging companies at 5:00 pm.
Workshop Master Classes:
Modern with Christopher Jackson – Former Alvin Ailey company member. Mr. Jackson was selected to join Ailey II in 2003, going on to become a member of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 2004. He currently is on faculty at the Ailey Extension program and the School of the Dance Theater of Harlem in NYC, and serves as Artistic Director for the Victory Dance Project. Mr. Jackson is also a veteran of Broadway shows such as “The Lion King,” “Dreamgirls the Musical,” and “The Wiz.”
Jazz with Natalie Malotke – Natalie Malotke is a director, choreographer, independent producer, and teaching artist based in New York City. She’s recently worked with Joshua Bergasse on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Pioneer Theatre artistic director Karen Azenberg, and Susan Stroman on the NYC Workshop of Little Dancer. Ms. Malotke sits on the artistic advisory board for the Encore’s Off-Center series at City Center and has worked as a producer at N+N Productions and Clear Talent Group.
Classical Indian Dance with Shanti Ashok – Shanthi Ashok is a Bharatanatyam teacher and is the founder of Nrityanjali, a Bharatanatyam school in Fairfax, VA. She started dancing under Guru S. Vasantha, Guru Indumathi and studied further with Guru Subbalakshmi in Bombay, India. In addition to her own school, Ms. Ashok teaches at several schools in the northern Virginia area, including Encore Theatrical.
Step Class with Keyanna from the National Step League – Keyanna Davis dances with the National Step League. African Step Dance is based on the African Gum Boot dance and has become one of the most exciting dance forms created in the 21st-century Stepping is a percussive, highly-energetic art form first developed through the song and dance rituals performed by African-American fraternities and sororities. VADC is proud to offer Step for the first time at DanceFest 2020.
