Dance Box Theater to premier their latest collaboration, Naked King: Subject to Change – Part I on September 21 & 22. Presented by Dance Place, Naked King: Subject to Change – Part I exposes white supremacy, power and abuse in order to transform towards equity, justice and healing. This full-evening dance theater work examines systems of oppression that perpetuate racism and misogyny, and explores how these cycles of abuse manifest in the art form of dance.

Through Naked King: Subject to Change – Part I, Dance Box Theater Co-Artistic Directors Stephen Clapp and Laura Schandelmeier ask, “Is it possible to navigate towards truth and healing when bombarded with syndicated lies and celebratory misogyny amidst a culture of sexual aggression and ongoing displays of racism at the highest levels of power?”

Naked King: Subject to Change – Part I is choreographed by Co-Artistic Directors Stephen Clapp and Laura Schandelmeier, in collaboration with Ronya Lee Anderson, Valerie Branch, Melissa Lineburg, Tariq O’Meally and Pricilla Smith as The Real Donna J. Trump. The work includes an original music score by Stephen Clapp, costumes by Pauline Anderson and Ronya-Lee Anderson, lighting design by Marianne Meadows, and staging and dramaturgy by Holly Bass. Naked King: Subject to Change – Part I exposes an abusive system within a Trumpian environment that seeks to dismantle itself through creative process. Like the child in Hans Christian Anderson’s tale, Dance Box Theater seeks to illuminate that “…the Emperor has no clothes”.

Performances will take place on Saturday, September 21 at 8pm, and Sunday, September 22 at 7pm. All performances will be at Dance Place, 3225 8th Street NE Washington, DC 20017. For tickets call (202) 269-1600 or visit danceplace.org.

Sunday evening’s 7pm performance will include a presentation of the 2018 Pola Nirenska Award to Laura Schandelmeier.
