Punished Ones” details the lives of 6 obstetric fistula survivors in Subsaharan Africa and South Asia. Obstetric fistulae occur when a pregnant woman/girl experiences a prolonged labor and can not get access to proper medical care quickly enough, resulting in an injury that causes incontinence, infertility, and social isolation. This condition is entirely preventable, but child marriage and poverty put many young women and girls at risk.
One section of this piece will be performed at the Black Dance Festival DMV this Fall (date(s) tba). I am looking for 5 dancers (all genders) to present the story of Abebu, a young woman who was abandoned by her husband and shunned by her family after suffering from an obstetric fistula.
Performance(s) will be paid. On Sunday August 25, a promotional photo shoot will be held, and any dancers who are able to attend are encouraged to do so. A google form will be posted on this event page soon to reserve your spot at the audition. Please let me know if you have any questions!
