Job Opening – Joy of Motion Dance Center

The Executive Director Position

The Executive Director partners with the Board of Directors and manages the day-to-day operations of JOMDC. Specific key responsibilities include:

• Effectively marketing JOMDC to a wide range of audiences
• Leading staff in the completion of organizational strategy
• Engaging and supporting a diverse faculty who are critically important to our mission and to our dancers
• Engaging volunteers and interns as needed to support the organization’s mission
• Securing sufficient operating funds and strengthening the organization’s financial position with new and/or expanded sources of revenue
• Engaging the board of directors in providing leadership and vision and holding the organization accountable
• Creating awareness and excitement in the community about the work JOMDC is doing to make dance accessible to everyone
• Delivering an excellent dance education program for beginning to professional level adult and youth students
• Developing accountability systems for monitoring and tracking organization performance
• Developing and managing organization and program budgets
• Operating the organization with a balanced budget, hiring and developing staff, and acting as the voice of JOMDC

The new Executive Director will collaborate with the board to refine our current strategic direction to include:

• Continuing the current direction by offering a breadth and depth of dance education, performance and production opportunities
• Making strategic investments in marketing, student recruitment, and staff development
• Expanding fund-raising through a combination of grants, corporate sponsorships and other funding strategies.
• Preparing for long-term sustainability, including looking for a permanent facility in the upper Northwest area of DC
• Looking for studio space for potential business expansion in the Washington/Maryland/VA area

During the first 12-18 months, the new Executive Director should plan to:

• Develop connections and contacts within the DC community, including key relationships needed to move the organization forward
• Develop a full appreciation for operating Joy of Motion Dance Center and understanding of the annual cycle of programs and production activity
• Develop and begin implementation of a 3-year strategic plan with goals and objectives
• Cultivate leadership and management talent among studio managers and other organization staff
• Build opportunities for contributors, including corporate sponsors and individual contributions

• Visionary approach and style with experience in long-term fund raising
• Leads by cultivating different views, values and approaches
• Extroverted style and comfortable acting as the “face” or “identity” of JOMDC with the media and community
• Self-confident leader who prefers to directly address problems and manage people, with an emphasis on logic and reasoning
• Excellent interpersonal and people skills with a high-level of emotional intelligence for responding to our various constituents in the spirit of the kind, gentle reputation that is important in the Joy of Motion culture
• Track record of success as an administrator
• Mindful about sustaining and building on existing strengths
• Track record of growing another organization or business to its next level of success
• Arts management experience and a great appreciation for the arts, and dance in particular
• Personal philosophy about the arts and dance aligns with the Joy of Motion view that dance is for everyone
• Familiarity and connection in the greater Washington DC area helpful

Required Experience and Attributes

• Minimum 10 years professional experience with senior responsibility, management and networking, preferably in a customer-focused type of organization
• Minimum 5 years professional or volunteer experience with a nonprofit organization
• Demonstrated financial management experience
• Demonstrated positive experience leading and developing a team
• Experience raising $25,000 or more from a single donor or funder
• Experience securing corporate sponsorships and increasing corporate funding
• Proficient in use of current social media, technology and electronic communication methods
• Master’s degree in relevant field or bachelor’s degree with extensive experience
