HATCH: Call for Choreographers

If you are an artist whose itching to create a new dancework, can Birds on A Wire help you?

HATCH: HATCH is a ten month long program focused on serving emerging choreographers in developing and presenting new dance works. If you have a new work you want to make, HATCH can provide the technical resources, contacts, networking, and production support so you can spread your wings (we love bird puns!). Basically, Birds on a Wire will present your work and handle the shit. You focus on the art.

Here are some of the things you’ll get:

  1. Venue and professional equipment: BOAW will present your work in a professional theatrical venue with a full lighting grid and performance-level sound equipment.
  2. Technical support: BOAW will provide the board operators, stage managers, and production crew to run the show.
  3. Training: BOAW will conduct structured informational sessions with various people who help choreographers make better work: lighting designers, sound designers, stage managers, dramaturgs, etc.
  4. Video: BOAW will provide you with a professional video recording of your fully-produced work to use for promotions, grant applications, etc.
  5. Support: BOAW will organize a monthly support group session with the other HATCH participants and BOAW directors.

Here’s what we expect from you:

  1. A new dance work that illustrates your best choreographic and directorial abilities
  2. Attendance and participation in all the informational sessions and group meetings
  3. To support and provide advice to other HATCH participants

We want to challenge you to make your best work — the kind of work that you can’t make if you’re worrying about marketing and fundraising and all the things that detract from your artistic focus.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

The work presented at HATCH must be a new work; no re-staging or previously premiered works, please. That said, HATCH is open to highly developed concepts as well as seedling ideas. There is no limit to the number of performers and the series is open to any style of dance. Recipients can be a single choreographer or a collaborative partnership/group. However, all collaborators must be fully committed to attending all informational sessions, meetings, and be equally involved in the process.

To apply: Send the following information to info

1. Answer the following questions: (Please limit the total of your responses to one page.)

  • Who are you as an artist, choreographer, director, or collaborator?
  • How do you envision the work you want to make?
  • How can HATCH help you to develop, expand, or progress in your career?
  • Tweet to the Birds: Is there anything else you want us to know about yourself or your project? Give it to us in a “tweet.” 140 characters or less, hashtags welcome.

2. Submit one work sample in any form of media you feel represents your work well. Please provide a link or file. This could be a YouTube link, Vimeo link, Dropbox link, or e-mailed file.

Deadline: August 24, 2015
