Arts Action Alert - Take Action Now!
July 15, 2014

Dear Arts Advocate:

U.S. House Appropriations CommitteeAs you might recall, last week the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee approved a bill that cut $8 million each from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Humanities Endowment.

Following that markup, Americans for the Arts sent out an e-blast calling on 250,000 arts advocates around the country to take action, and our state advocacy captain network also began contacting members of Congress. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) drafted an amendment to restore the cuts that she had planned to offer at this morning’s full committee markup.

However, just a few hours ago arts advocates were surprised and excited to hear that the subcommittee chairman, Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA), arrived at the committee this morning with some further changes to the bill and among them was arestoration of the $8 million to each of the endowments. This is an important development, and is an outcome of the bipartisan support that quickly formed to protect NEA and NEH funding. Should this bill be approved by the committee today, it is expected to be considered by the full House of Representatives where we will fight to maintain the $146 million level of funding.

Thank you to the thousands of arts advocates who sent messages to their members of Congress in the last few days-it made a huge difference!
